Three major enhancements to TRACE700 were released as version 4.1.5 on March10,

2004.

To get your update go to the C.D.S. Download Center. Select your software to

download, select update from resource and enter your four-digit, alphanumeric ID (for

example #CDS).

Version4.1.5 adds Green Building XML (GBXML) export TRACE700 – to – CAD, a tool

for managing library members, and a new System Component Selection report.

GBXML was developed to facilitate the transfer of building information stored in CAD

models which is essential to designing resource efficient buildings. GBXML describes the

building with zones, spaces, building components, materials, and mechanicals as a

complete model.

In a previous release of TRACE700, we introduced the ability to import information from

GBXML. TRACE700 version 4.1.5 now has the ability to export calculation results back

to the originating GBXML file. This ability to "round-trip" data, going from CAD to TRACE

and back to CAD, is a very significant milestone in our future ability to interact with

The new library management tool renames all of the TRACE 600 (EQ) library

members with more intuitive descriptions. It also lets you toggle between showing or

hiding these members within drop-down lists. If you wish, use the show/hide feature to

conceal "OLD" library members, such as obsolete equipment.

Finally, the new System Component Selection report will provide you with all the

relevant information you need to make your airside equipment selections. No longer will

you have to worry about which report, or combination or reports, should be used to

obtain the appropriate design information. It will all be on one single report.

The System Component Selection report will tell you which components your system is

made of (fans, coils, terminal boxes,etc.), as well as, where they are located (system,

zone or room) and will even tell you how many rooms and zones you have assigned to

that system. It will display design calculation results, such as airflows, capacities, and

entering and leaving conditions, and chiller sizing information. In addition to providing

you with the necessary design information, it is a quick and easy way to verify that your

system model is set up the way you intended it to be.

New License Available for the TRACE Family of Software

Starting February 23, 2004, choose from three licensing options when purchasing Trane ®

software.

Single user - limits use of the licensed program to one computer. Site - permits use of

the licensed program on an unlimited number of stand-alone computers. Network or LAN

(Local Area Network) - allows each licensed TRACE program to be used on a series of

stand-alone computers or a single networked group of computers. Network client seats

may be purchased for a one-time charge of $75 each, per location. The number of client

seats purchased limits the number of click who can simultaneously use the program.

The computers on which the program(s) are installed and/or which are physically

connected to the network must be within the physical confines of the business operation.

All existing TRACE customers will be grandfathered into this new license agreement and

are exempt from purchasing network client seats. The $75 per seat charge carries a 30day

Does TRACE calculate the block load for my building, the largest simultaneous peak of

all my systems, so that I can size the chiller plant? Which report should I use for sizing

the chiller plant? The answers to these questions are yes, that TRACE will calculate a

building block load, and this block tonnage can be found on the Design Capacity report.

Due to recent enhancements to the program, TRACE calculates this building block load

by running through the load calculations twice, the first time to calculate the room and

system loads, and the second time to determine the largest simultaneous load for the

building. This second run through, the load calculations can significantly increase the run

time, however, particularly for buildings with a large number of rooms and systems.

To avoid the extra run time during design calculations on jobs which do not require the

building block load, TRACE defaults to the building block load feature being turned off. In

other words, the building block will not be calculated unless you specifically choose to

turn this feature on.

The building block load calculation can be turned on by going into Windows Explorer,

navigating to the TRACE700 folder (normally c:\cds\trace700), and double clicking on

the T700Special.ini file. This will open the T700Special.ini file in the Notepad text editing

program. The last line in the first section of this file reads Retest Peaks=No. "No" means

that the building block calculation is turned off. Replace the word no with sum, and then

save the file and exit out of Notepad. After this change, when you open your file in

TRACE and calculate the Design section, the building block load will be calculated

automatically.

When the output reports are displayed on the Design Reports tab, choose the Design

Capacity report. The top part of this report will list the individual systems in this

building, and the Cooling Totals column will give a sum of the peaks total for all

systems. Below the tabular data there will be a single sentence in bold type which reads

something like: The building peaked at hour 15 month 7 with a capacity of 234

tons. This is the building block load. This is the tonnage that can be used for sizing the

chiller plant for the entire building.

times a year starting in March 2004. Classes will still be held three times a year in La

Crosse, Wisc. also.

C.D.S. training has historically been held in La Crosse every other month for more than 15

years. We thought it was time to branch out and try something different with it. The fourday

seminar covers load design, system simulation, equipment modeling and economics,

and utility costing.

The cost of the seminar is $1,000 for all four days. You can attend only the classes you

ASHRAE 90.1 Standard Defines Building Energy Simulation Program Testing

Requirements

In February of this year, addendum 90.1p, to ASHRAE Standard 90.1, was released by

the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

American National Standards Institute/American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air

Conditioning Engineers/Illuminating Engineering Society of North America

residential buildings, provides the minimum requirements for the design of energy

efficient buildings. Building energy simulation programs are used to estimate the energy

cost difference between the design and budget building models in Section 11 of Standard

90.1.

Addemdum 90.1p requires building energy simulation programs like Trane's TRACE700

program, to be tested using ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 140-2001, Standard Method of Test

for the Evaluation of Building Energy Analysis Computer programs. Standard 140

specifies the test procedures for evaluating the technical capabilities and ranges of

applicability of just click for source programs. ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 140 is based on the International

Energy Agency (IEA) BESTTEST. The BESTTEST is a formal procedure that addresses

quality control of the building energy simulation software. For more information on IEA

What does this mean for our customers? Basiclly, less bugs in the program. Engineers

and architects can be sure that their software programs are giving them accurate outputs

based on their inputs.

According to Jason Glazer, chair of the 90.1 energy cost budget method subcommittee,

"this is the most fundamental requirement of a building energy simulation program.

Clearly if this requirement is not met, it does not matter how well chillers and cooling

towers are simulated."

Trane's Customer Direct Services (C.D.S.) department has tested TRACE700 under

these new requirements. Christian Taber, C.D.S. marketing engineer said, "we are

compiling the results from the testing for version 4.1.5 link when that is done the data

will be made available to customers."

(LEED) certification, offered by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) with which

ASHRAE has a partnership agreement, the current version of LEED only requires the

1999 version of Standard 90.1. Until LEED changes to Standard 90.1 - 2001, with all
